As the name suggests Paranormal Activity revolves around a couple haunted by an evil force – the characters are played by Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat. The movie is made by Isreali- born writer/director Oren Peli. Peli is a video game designer turned filmmaker and has created this psychological thriller in such small scale with a great deal of heightened effect. Peli’s natural instincts are proved with the fact that the film was shot in just a few days at the director’s house, with no money and without involvement of stars and without a studio until much later. Reviews say that if you watch Paranormal Activity you will understand that although Peli does not have the sophistication and complexity of the master, he understands that what the audience does not see and the way that they don’t see is what counts and makes the difference.
The film is set in a San Diego suburb where Katie and Micah are setting up a DIY surveillance system to record any suspicious activity in the house. The camera keeps working night after night and the footage as well as free-style video shot by Micah himself is a primary point of view in the story. Although the footage looks real you will still feel it is real enough that you can sense a bonafide filmmaker’s hand in it.
There is nothing much of a story here except that Katie is being haunted by the evil and she is trying to escape. The script brings very little comedy with the psychic/ghost-buster visiting making house calls.
The plot is such where Katie reveals to Micah about her problem that an evil force is stalking her since childhood and as the story moves and Micah finally begins taking this issue seriously, the audience is wondering whether there will ever be a point in the film where one will feel anxiety.
However, Katie and Micah have played their roles quite well. Talking about the plot again, as Micah is shooting the footage and talking to Katie, the audience will understand that he is actually trying to elaborate lengths to prove that Katie has been imagining things.
We all are aware that there is something called the ‘fear of the unknown’. Keeping this in mind Peli works at mining the unknown using small moments with almost no special effects. The world Peli has created for Katie and Micah is a small one – in the story if they either go out we don’t see it and there are no friends or relatives who visit them.
Paranormal Activity is a faux documentary-style horror movie. It is said to be creating a lot of interest on the Internet and studio dispatches say that fans are demanding that the movie be released in the theaters immediately. The movie Paranormal Activity was made with a budget of about $15,000.
