You might have wanted to watch Couples Retreat to laugh your heart loud after seeing the bunch of comedian actors, with decent trailers that you have witnessed few weeks ago in your television. The visual retreat in form of cinematography of tropical beauty, sun bathed beaches, jet skis ensure that the movie has been marketed with excellent packaging. The movie is jam packed with numerous comedians, makes certain of comic relief in major scenes; the irony is that, it fails to deliver. It appears that the couples had fun while filming the movie but they fail to convey for what they have worked together that is pure entertainment. Almost all the characters are cardboard like and clichéd.
The essence of the story is about four couples with fluctuating nuptial crisis; decide to go to a tropical island resort, Bora Bora, in order to work out and make good their marriages. The predicament of these marriages ranges from adultery to kids issues, lack of romance etc. Dave (played by Vince Vaughn) and his better half Ronnie (played by Malin Akerman) want to spice up their love life and bring in the almost non-existent romance in their life, though both have managed pretty respectable and upright marriage.
There is another pair Jason (played by Jason Bateman) and Cynthia (played by Kirsten Bell) responsible for organizing the leisure trip to resort; the issues pertaining with child conception dominate their marriage life. They manage to convince other couples on account of the group rate. There is another guy Shane (played by Faizon Love) recently split who prefers dating 20 year old bimbo. While Joey played by (played by Jon Favreau) and Lucy by (played by Kirsten Davis) are high school sweet hearts who do not shy on cheating on each other. The humor is slapstick and is forced in form of therapy sessions by dudes sporting Speedo.
Though Couples Retreat was meant to be comedy, it fails to deliver. The attempt pathetic and unrealistic makes it chaotic affair. Plethora of characters who keep popping in and out of the screen, the wild, vulgar therapy sessions and gauche yoga scene with overzealous instructor makes it tacky.
The hilarity is delivered in form of cheap gags, nudity and vulgar jokes sprayed with obscenities which are bad in taste. It is not the best movie, neither it’s funny to watch. The movie is contemptible, with loathsome comedy flavored with romance. It surfaces as waste of money and time. Favereau and Vaughn needs to tighten their belts in their next movies with their proven previous decent track record. Vaughn is the guy who knows his craft and business well. The movie comes out dialog driven with generous sprinkling of slang, spiel and gags; at times it appears too impractical and silly.
The finale of Couples Curiosity is wrapped up in jiffy in five minutes so as to force in the “HAPPY ENDING”. It seemed that the movie makers had no idea to steer their yacht and hence brought it onto abrupt end. The final word is Couples Retreat is insipid far from being called funny. The wishy-washy characters and events make it even wretched.
